Where Do Interior Shutters Come From?

It’s commonly believed that interior shutters originated in southern houses and mansions, but the first versions appeared in ancient Greece. Believe it or not, the original interior shutters were marble instead of wood; one can only imagine how heavy they were. Much later, woodworkers made them for King Louis XIV of France, giving rise to modern interior shutter designs.

Wooden shutters arrived in the United States in the 18th century where designers used them on plantation manors. That’s where the name came from, and while the industry recognizes it, many also refer to them as interior shutters. Along with the name, another thing remains – an elegant look that consistently garners attention and compliments.

Hunter Douglas Custom Interior Shutters

We carry three lines of Hunter Douglas interior shutters made from wood, composite materials, and vinyl.

Heritance® Hardwood Shutters Have Traditional Style

Crafted from high-quality hardwood, Heritance® Hardwood Shutters feature Truemill® dovetail construction and 100% genuine wood harvested from responsibly managed forests. They are exceptionally durable because of the Hunter Douglas Integra™ Finish, which gives your interior shutters an eye-catching luster and low-maintenance care.

These custom interior shutters come in 2 ½”, 3 ½”, and 4 ½” louver sizes and fit windows that are 12” to 116” high and 7” to 3-½” wide. You can enhance your interior shutters with custom paints and stains or a convenient one-touch closure; ask about SoftClose™ Louvers with Quick Align™. Heritance® Wood Shutters have five control options, which we can customize for odd-shaped windows. Hunter Douglas interior shutters for sliding glass doors and French doors are also available.

NewStyle® Composite Shutters are Stronger Than Hardwood

NewStyle® Composite Shutters look like the real thing but are durable because of the manufactured materials they use. It’s a high-tech alternative that makes sense if you want the added strength. Crafted with Truemill® dovetail construction with the same louver sizes as Heritance® Wood Shutters, these composite shutters have a low-luster Finetech® finish that resembles finely painted wood.

Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Vinyl Shutters Make Life Simple

These modern shutters use a UV-resistant Polysatin™ compound that easily withstands heat and moisture. The Hunter Douglas Palm Beach Promise™ guarantees that these window covers will not fade, crack, chip, warp, peel, or discolor, thanks to the Polysatin™ compound. They have resin blocks and aluminum bracing, with sizes of 2 ½’, 3 ½”, and 4 ½” louver. The intense Florida sun, heat, and humidity are no match for these extraordinary shutters.

You can control Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Vinyl Shutters with different louver, tilting, and panel options, or you can enjoy the simplicity of PowerView® Automation. We can custom order them for almost every window and glass door size.
