Benefits of Area Rugs

Looking for new ways to spice up your living room? Working on a space that's missing that finishing touch? Area rugs are a versatile solution and much more interesting than wall-to-wall carpets. If you're considering adding an area rug or two to your living room, there are a few things to consider, including size and color.

Area rug and furniture in a living room

Area Rug Benefits

  • An area rug allows you to show off gorgeous hardwood floors while adding some softness.
  • Large living rooms can be broken up into defined zones using area rugs. This can turn an expansive space into a few smaller, cozy areas.
  • Area rugs are much easier to clean and maintain since they are mobile.
  • You can move your area rug to another part of your home if you choose, and you can also take it with you if you ever move.

Choosing a Size

When selecting a size, it's best to err on the side of "bigger is better." An area rug that is too small will look out of place and can make your living room look unfinished or disjointed. There should be between 4-8 inches of bare floor on all sides of an area rug. If you can't fit all the legs of your furniture on the carpet, just the front legs will do. You don't want to have an area rug stranded in the middle of the room like a deserted island.

Color & Pattern

Flooring has a significant impact on the overall aesthetic of a room. We recommend keeping the following things in mind when deciding on a color and pattern:

  • Patterns can easily add color and interest to a room with a neutral color palette.
  • Darker patterns shades will hide dirt and spills better than a lighter-colored, solid area rug.
  • Rooms with an eclectic style pair well with solid rugs in a neutral hue. The color will blend well with the room without taking away from the colorful decor.
  • You can pull one or two primary colors from your room's decor and use those in the design of your area rug. This will keep any hues from clashing and creating a cluttered-looking space.

Material

Like wall-to-wall carpets, area rugs are available in a number of different materials. Decide how much time you can commit to cleaning the rug before making your final choice.

  • The natural fiber of wool adds a soft, warm touch to your living. Wool is durable and stain-resistant but does require professional cleaning.
  • Cotton is a common material for area rugs and gives a room a put-together yet casual feel. Since cotton rugs are more lightweight, they are perfect for summer use, and many can be machine washed.
  • Synthetic fibers, such as polyester and nylon, come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They resist staining and fading and are easy to clean.
